“Home is the place where, when you go there, they have to let you in,” wrote New England poet Robert Frost.
True, unless you’re an American living outside the United States, in which case you’re forced to renounce or relinquish your birth right. If you’re an American ex-pat who spent your working years outside of U.S. borders, you can never really go home.
Thank you Patrick Cain for the great article.
I’ve posted this comment at Isaac Brock: http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/2014/04/04/how-to-get-rid-of-your-us-citizenship/comment-page-1/#comment-1369775 to set the record right on my and my family’s situation. The changes will not mean anything for the purpose of Patrick Cain’s fine article, but I thought I should make my facts clear. I don’t think I’m paranoid when I think that *someone* somewhere is following all the details of my son’s story.
There are some really excellent comments on the article. I threw mine in this morning,
“Given the powers the US govt has granted itself, and how it is treating both it’s own citizens, and citizens of other countries, it’s not far-fetched to think that this is just the first volley fired at Canada. Taking billions from Canada’s economy by blackmailing Canadian banks may be just step 1. We know that other countries are eyeing our natural resources with an envious eye. If Canada bows down to this in 2014, what does the future hold for our sovereignty? With the US using their own natural resources at an alarming rate, what happens when they introduce more measures intended to gain control of Canada’s resources? The precedent has already been set by our govt allowing a foreign country to enforce it’s laws within Canada’s borders”
No, I’m not really a conspiracy-theorist, though I’ve been concerned for several years about the encroachment of the US into Canada. I do fear this is just the start of worse things to come from the US.
