Open Letter to Flaherty, Mulcair and Trudeau

Here is an Open Letter to Flaherty, Mulcair and Trudeau from Lynne Swanson red envelope(aka Blaze) in The Money Guide.
The letter asks a simple question:

Do all Canadians have the same rights under the laws of Canada and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms?

As the letter concludes:

The answer is equally simple: Yes or No.
We need the answer now. This nightmare had dragged on for too long.

  1. @Saddened: When are you changing your name? You must be happy by now–You’re a Canadian citizen.
Do you have a date to advise Consulate you relinquished?

  2. Thank you again Lynne! You just continually amaze me. You are so tireless at getting these articles and letters done. I can’t thank you enough, that’s exactly the sort of letter they need to answer to!

  3. @Ferfet: I’m so glad to hear from you! I have thought of you often, but it’s been so long since we’ve heard from you.
How are you doing? How is your husband?

    1. I’m sorry to say that my husband passed away May 23rd. He fought so hard right to his last breath. He lost the battle on his last day, but he was the winner the other four years. I’m very sad, but feel blessed having my children and grandchildren close by.
It makes me so angry and sad to think his last couple of years , I had to spend time and energy worrying about this.
As I mentioned to you before, I have been on disability and had no income to declare for the last 15 years. Now I will be collecting a portion of my husband’s company pension…. So now I have to file after 40 years living in Canada. I still will not owe the US a penny!! Just going to cost me to have an accountant feel out a bunch of unnecessary forms!
My fear ….that all of you will give up fighting. I just don’t have the energy to do what you are doing. Thank You.

  4. Ferfet,
Sincere condolences on the loss of your husband.
It is for people just like those in your family that persons at Maple Sandbox and Isaac Brock and the Franco-American Flophouse will not tire in fighting the good fight.
    Take special care!

  5. @Ferget: You do not need to fear. We will not give up fighting. Hearing from people like you restores our determination.
I’m so sorry about your husband and that you were so consumed by this the last two years of his life.
I know you and I share the same health challenges. Take care of yourself and keep checking back with us.

  6. Ferfet. Sorry to hear about your loss.
As far as paying someone to file US returns; why bother? It would be a further waste of your valuable time and money. They won’t come after you.

  7. @Ferfet
My condolences. I too know your feelings of loss. There are no words but the passing of time will help. Keep checking in. My husband died in 2001, not knowing of the nightmare of FATCA to come.
